A low voltage is best for LED downlights to function properly. If you already have low voltage halogen bulbs installed with an existing transformer, you will need to find the transformer’s maximum load. This will tell you the maximum wattage they can carry and will give you an indication of the wattage you should choose for your new LED lighting.

Replacing a halogen light bulb is also a lot simpler than swapping out a faulty LED unit, however, you may be doing it more often as halogen bulbs have a shorter lifespan than LEDs. That said, the average cost of a halogen bulb is between £5 to £20, so having to replace them every few years is hardly going to break the bank.

Halogens 2000 hours, while both bulbs run hot, Xenon runs considerably cooler than Halogen, hence the warning on the lamp fixture. Halogen and tungsten halogen are the same, they are light with a tungsten filament and filled with Halogen gas. I would return the halogens, if you can, but regardless, use the xenon bulbs.

That being said, whether you're upgrading from an old halogen downlight or swapping an existing LED downlight, the process can still be a bit tricky.
