The original point of the dual hidden blades was to allow Ezio to perform double assassinations, but being able to do it without two blades also makes sense. The biggest issue the AC hidden blades have is that the blade itself actually telescopes in two pieces beyond the blade housing. Colin Furze on YouTube made a functioning hidden blade based on the OTF design that actuates both ways with a ring on a cable but it's a single piece blade and barely extends to the palm.
